Pros:
-Forced wakeup, cancelling a class within 12 hours of the start time incurs a $15 missed class fee. I don’t know about you, but with my starter salary that means money > sleep so you’d best bet I’m not wasting $15 to sleep in!
-A max of 20 people in a class means having a personal trainer at your dispoal to help improve form and aid in weak areas.
-Opportunities for new experiences if you’re burned out of the typical workout.
-Flexibility! Classes are available for essentially every hour of the day.
-Perks (e.g. Cycle 614 offers damp towels after your ride; The Fitness Loft has the best sauna for a post-Insanity sweat sesh)
-Variety (Meditation Yoga one morning to hardcore CrossFit gymrats the next)
-No hidden starter fee that most gyms stick to you when beginning a membership
-Convinced myself that my new fitness lifestyle deserved an updated yoga pants drawer. Woooo!
Cons:
-$80/month, definitely more pricey than your average LA Fitness at $30/month, or Planet Fitness at a competitive $10/month
-Extra $15 per cancelled class, and $20 for a missed class that was not cancelled ahead of time. Yikes.
-Life happens. If an unexpected event pops up within 12 hours of your class start time, you’re SOL for $15. This has happened to me at least once a month since starting, and I can imagine it does to most people.
-That heart-pounding, scary first 5 minutes of trying a new class alone and not knowing where to stand, what to bring, or what to wear.
-Extra driving to various studios in the city means paying more money for gas.
-Get in shape while having fun... wait that's a good thing?!
Clearly, I’m a little more biased to the “Pros” section of this post. Regardless, this does not make me blind to the negatives of purchasing a ClassPass membership either. I have spent way more on the “Fitness” section of my budget in 2016 than what I would have ever imagined. However, by the end of my very first week of ClassPass I realized that this was an investment in my health that I truly enjoyed and I was actually having fun while doing it. It was worth it to me! Being the number cruncher I am, if I were to go to 5 fitness classes per week for a month, this would break down to $4/class. WHAT? Most “posh” fitness studios that offer classes in German Village, Upper Arlington, and Dublin run anywhere from $10-$25 per class. Needless to say this satisfied my concern that I was possibly not paying for value, when in reality I truly was getting a great deal for my investment.
I love to save money where possible, so I will do my best in my future blog posts to alert you all of any specials, Groupons, and memberships that give you the best bang for your buck!
